Pune: Sassoon Hospital performs its tenth kidney transplant

After conducting its first liver transplant, Sassoon Hospital recently carried out another liver transplants. Overall, it also witnessed its tenth kidney transplant


A 52-year-old woman met with a road accident on October 09. The woman who belonged to Varud village in Satara’s Khatav taluka was being treated in her home town, but was later referred to Sassoon General Hospital, Pune on the next day (September 11) at 2 a.m.

After continuous efforts for resuscitation, she was declared ‘brain-dead’ on October 11, at 6 p.m., her relatives gave their consent for organ donation after being counselling at the hospital. The woman’s kidney and liver given to two wait-listed patients at Sassoon Hospital

The recipient of the liver was a 54 year-old ex-serviceman, who was a resident of Jakatwadi Taluka in Satara. He was suffering from liver cirrhosis since the last three years. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital and was advised him to go in for a liver transplant.

The kidney recipient is a 38-year-old resident of Indapur, Pune. He is a rickshaw driver by occupation. The patient was suffering from kidney disease since 2012. He needed dialysis twice a week since 2014. He was advised to undergo a kidney transplant by doctors.

As he was financially weak, his kidney transplant was done through Mahatma Jyotibha Phule Jan Arogya Yojana.

The transplant team consisted of Dr Suresh Patankar, Dr Rajesh Shrotri, Dr Bhalchandra Kashyapi, Dr Abhijit Patil and Dr Shankar Mundhe under the able guidance of Sassoon Hospital’s Dean, Dr Ajay Chandanwale.
