- In India, 5 lakh people die every year, due to non-availability of human organs.
- There is a huge gap between the demand and supply of organs. And there is a shortage of organ donors in our country.
- In India, only 0.58 per million donate their organs, when the demand for the organs runs in lakhs.
- One organ donor can save up to eight lives.
In order to change the mind-set of the people towards organ donation, Indian Medical Association, Thane, Maharashtra, and Rotary club had organised an Organ Donation awareness campaign. 150 people including doctors and members of the rotary club were present for the program.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Santosh Kadam, Secretary, IMA, Thane said, “We have invited one family member, who had donated organs of their son. The family didn’t know what information organ donation meant and had no prior exposure to the concept. But, after counselling, the family decided to donate the organs. 50 members have pledged to donate their organs.”
Dr Kadam further added, “We need to spread the awareness about organ donation to the mass scale. We should inform people about the importance of organ donation. So, that more and more people will come forward to donate organs.”
