Organ donation: Brain-dead Pune youth helps save four lives

The young man was working in the private sector in Bhosari area of Pune. Last week, on Thursday, February 14, the youth met with a road accident. After which he was immediately rushed and admitted to a private hospital. Later, on the recommendation of doctors treating him he was shifted to Sassoon General Hospital.

During his treatment at the hospital, he was eventually declared brain-dead by the doctors. His parents were counselled by coordinators at the hospital, after thorough counselling, his parents consented to donate their son’s organs.

His father who is farmer, said, “We agreed to donate his organs and we are proud that our son has helped people even after his death. All our relatives also supported us in our decision.”

While the man’s heart and pancreas were retrieved and sent to patients in private hospitals in Pune, one kidney was transplanted in Sassoon General Hospital, whereas the other one was given to a private hospital in Nashik.

Speaking about the organ donation which occurred at the hospital, Dr Murlidhar Tambe, Dean of Sassoon General Hospital, stated, “This was the 18th kidney transplant at our hospital. We are glad to be of help to poor patients and to be a contributor in the movement of organ donation.”
