Organ donation: 47-year-old brain dead man helps save three lives

The family of a 47-year-old brain-dead man helped in providing the gift of life to three patients who were waitlisted for an organ transplant. This invaluable sacrifice will help give them a second chance at life

The organ donation took place at Jupiter Hospital in Thane on Thursday, May 23. The family was aware about the concept of organ donation. This was Mumbai’s 39th organ donation so far, this year. A liver, kidneys and cornea were retrieved in the organ donation process.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Anirudh Kulkarni ZTCC coordinator for Jupiter Hospital, said, “The 47-year-old man met with a bike accident and was immediately rushed to the hospital. A day later, he was declared as brain-dead by the doctors.”

He added, “The family knew about organ donation but were a bit hesitant, but after being counselled for some time, they were willing to donate their relative’s organs.”

Kulkarni further added, “The liver was retained with Jupiter Hospital. While the kidneys were sent to Saifee Hospital. The corneas were sent to Sahiyara eye bank.”
