Organ donation: 34-year-old woman gives a new life to 4

Organ donation awareness campaign is picking up momentum. A lot of people are coming forward to donate organs by understanding the importance of ‘one organ can save up to 8 lives’. Similarly, a 34-year-old woman’s husband granted the permission to donate her organs. The organ donation was done on October 10 in Mumbai’s Apollo Hospital. Woman’s heart, liver and kidneys were donated. This is Mumbai’s 46 th cadaver donation

Parents donate organ of their brain-dead son, save four lives

34-year-old Navi Mumbai’s resident started feeling dizzy after which she was admitted to DY Patil Hospital. Her medical examination revealed that there was a blood clot in her brain. She was taking treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Due to excessive bleeding she was declared brain dead.

But, her family refused to believe the same and admitted her to Mumbai’s Apollo Hospital. A team of doctors examined her on October 9 and declared her brain dead. The woman’s family is going through financial crisis. Her husband is a driver and a sole bread winner of the house. She has a 12-year-old son and a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. Even after all this, the lady’s husband gave a nod for donating her organs.

After the family granted the permission, her heart, liver and kidneys were donated. Her heart was donated in Fortis Hospital Mulund. Her liver was transplanted to a patient taking treatment in Apollo Hospital. One of her kidney was given in Apollo Hospital and the other in Nanavati Hospital, informed the organ transplant coordinator.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Rahul Vaswani, organ transplant coordinator of Nanavati Hospital said, “The organ donation took place in Apollo Hospital and one kidney has been sent to Nanavati Hospital. Kidney was given to a 45-year-old female patient who was on dialysis, since last three years.
