On his 43rd birthday, Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan pledged his eyes for donation. The light-eyed actor signed the eye donation form of Aditya Jyot Eye Bank in Wadala (Mumbai) and is now a part of list of celebrities who have pledged their eyes after death.
“Eye donation is supreme among all donations. By pledging to donate his eyes on his birthday, Hrithik has set an example for others and will inspire many to follow suit,” said Dr S Natarajan, Director of Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital, who was present when the actor signed the form at his house in Juhu on January 10.
In the last few years, Mumbai has seen a positive approach towards eye donation. Health experts say awareness on organ donation has encouraged eye donation in the city.
An official from city’s biggest eye bank, The Eye Bank Coordination and Research Centre, said increase in number of eye donations has significantly reduced waiting period for needy patients.
“When celebrities endorse a cause, people follow them. Donating eyes is a noble cause. We need more people to pledge their eyes as waiting period for corneal transplant is six months to a year,” said Dr Arjun Ahuja, Head of Ophthalmology Department, KEM Hospital.
At present, most donors are senior citizens.
“Eye donors could belong to any age group or sex. But if the donor is between age 10 to 50, then the chances of better quality cornea is high,” added Ahuja.
The list of Bollywood celebrities who have pledged their eyes include Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Rajnikanth among others. Actor Randeep Hooda and Kajal Aggarwal, too, recently pledged to donate their eyes after being inspired by Aggarwal’s character of a visually-disabled girl in their upcoming movie, ‘Do Lafzon Ki Kahani’.
