Obesity: Four ladies from the same family undergo bariatric surgery on the same day

The world today is going towards a fitter direction. There is an increasing awareness about the ill effects of being obese and obesity related health complications. In order to get rid of obesity, four members of the same family underwent a bariatric surgery for sustained weight loss on the same day

Women can often be best friends of each other. It was in March 2017 that four ladies from the same household decided to undergo bariatric surgery on the same day from the same place only to help one another in times of need.

When Surat based Jasuben Ghenani, (60) along with her two sisters-in-law Smita Parvadia (65), Bhavna Parvadia (44) and cousin Jigna (name changed; 41) decided to opt for bariatric surgery, they were quite sure about their decision.

“We wanted to get rid of our health complications. One of my brother, who is a heart patient was struggling with obesity and had already undergone bariatric surgery. So, we were convinced that this should be done by us to take care of ourselves,” says Jasuben who weighed 93kgs at the time of the surgery and was suffering from diabetes, hypertension and crippling joint pain.

Jigna who weighed 85 kgs was struggling with hypertension and thyroid problem since last ten years. “Most of our family members including me are on a heavier side. I have tried gymming, dieting, ayurvedic treatment but nothing really helped. I was getting worried as I did not want to end up having other obesity-related problems such as diabetes.”

Bhavna started gaining weight after her first pregnancy 12 years ago. A recent accident in which she injured her leg made matter worse. “I was in a lot of pain, finding it difficult to walk or sit properly even,” remembers Bhavna who weighed 83 kgs at the time of her surgery.

Smita who weighed 82 kgs was also suffering from borderline diabetes, hypertension and back and joint pain. “We witnessed a drastic change in our lives after the surgery. We are more active now and our medicines were gradually stopped.”

Six months since their surgeries, all four of them have lost a considerable amount of weight. While Bhavna has lost 18 kgs, Jigna, Jasuben and Smita have lost 16, 17, and 14 kgs respectively.

Dr Ramen Goel, Senior Bariatric Surgeon, Director- Center of Bariatric & Metabolic Surgery, Wockhardt Hospitals operated on all four of them on March 31st. “It is amazing how women in India are taking charge of their health. For me collective will of these four represent the changing face of society. All of them underwent sleeve gastrectomy, a type of bariatric surgery in which weight loss is achieved through removal of a portion of the stomach,” said Dr Goel.
