Nagpur: ‘There is no Free and fair working environment,’ allege MARD doctors

In yet another incident of senseless violence, a mob tried to forcefully enter into IMGC Nagpur on Tuesday evening at around 10 pm. The mob tried to deliberately attack the security personnel posted on duty at the gates of the institute. A case has been lodged against the hooligans and the accused have been arrested.

The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has written a letter to the Girish Mahajan, the Medical Education Minister of Maharashtra, regarding the security issues hampering residents doctors safety, highlighting the laxity at IGMC hospital in particular.

In that letter the MARD allege that ‘resident doctors and all the staff were unsafe inside the campus. A few days back similar chaotic situation had occurred where mob threw stones on window glasses of MICU at IGMC.’

While speaking about the acts of violence being committed at IGMC Nagpur, Dr Lokesh Chirwatkar, President of Central MARD, stated, “Currently 68 MSF guards appointment, addition of 38 to 48 MSF guards was promised in last meeting. There is not effective pass system or alarm system in hospital which was ensured in last meeting. This lack of security would lead to lack of faith in administration.”

Dr Chirwatkar added, “There is no Free and fair working environment. And as there is no law and order of common man than there should be no law for resident doctors also.”

He further added, “We ask government to provide security in ample number as per Bombay High Courts’ directives or else give us a licensed gun to protect ourselves.”

He concluded saying, “If necessary actions are not taken promptly, to make deaf administration hear our plea, IGMC and GMC Nagpur would go on mass leave agitation. We appeal for Pan Maharashtra agitation by support from all local MARDS. We demand our safety kindly take this issue seriously and look into it as soon as possible.”

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Praveen Salunkhe, Joint MD, Maharashtra Security Corporation, said, “10-12 people were trying to force their way inside to the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College. They had a scuffle with the Maharashtra Security Corporation Guards. The accused have been arrested and a case has been registered against them.”
