Nagpur marks its first organ donation of 2019, brain-dead youth saves 3 lives

The family of a 23-year-old youth consented to donate his organs after being counselled by the doctors. The difficult decision which they have made in their time of grief has helped give the gift of life to three people

The cadaver donation took place at Wockhardt Hospital in Nagpur, Maharashtra. The 23-year-old was a resident of Amravati in the Vidharbha region of Maharashtra. The name of the deceased is Omprakash Gosatkar.

Omprakash had met with a bike accident on Wednesday, January 30. In all the family consented to donate his kidneys and liver.

The family was counselled about the concept of organ donation, as they were unaware of it. The doctors at the hospital and organ transplant coordinators counselled the family thoroughly so that they could make an informed decision.

After the bike accident, the young man was rushed and admitted to Irvin Hospital in Amaravati, then, eventually as his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Wockhardt Hospital in Nagpur.

While undergoing treatment doctors at the hospital declared him as brain-dead. After which the process of counselling the parents begun. The family consented and agreed to donating this organs

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Veena Wathore, Organ Transplant Coordinator, ZTCC, Nagpur, said, “A 23-year-old boy who had met with an accident was declared brain-dead by the doctors at Wockhardt Hospital. We counselled his family members and they agreed to donate the organs. Both the kidneys and the liver has been successfully donated.”

One kidney has been given to a patient admitted to Orange City Hospital and the other kidney has been given to the patient waiting for a kidney at Super Speciality Hospital.

The liver has been sent to a person who was on the waiting-list Alexis Hospital, Nagpur.
