While it is easier for people who live in joint or nuclear families to look after the health and well-being of other family members, senior citizens who live alone find it difficult to do so.

It is important for them to do the best they can to remain healthy. In monsoon, wet roads can make elderly people more prone to slipping. This can lead to severe injuries, such as a fracture.

Silver Innings, a home for assisted living elder care and an NGO which works for the rights of senior citizens, has listed a few precautionary tips for the elderly:

  • Walk slowly
  • Take small steps
  • Drink boil water
  • Avoid getting wet in rain
  • Wash your hands and legs immediately upon reaching home
  • Keep a slow pace while driving
  • Avoid street food
  • Avoid dirty and wet cloths
  • Use mosquito nets and repellents
  • Take care of an open wound
  • Eat healthy diet
  • Avoid cold food
  • Wash green vegetables in warm water
  • Dry cloths and footwear, after stepping out
  • Always carry umbrella or raincoat
  • Keep torch or candle handy in case a power outage
  • Consult a doctor for stomach pain, fever, rashes and vomit symptoms
  • Keep a stock an emergency kit, which contains essential medicines, first-aid items, extra food items, adequate drinking water reserve, and a backup power supply
  • Do not walk through waterlogged roads to save time during travel. This can be very dangerous, as any deep pothole or an open manhole can lead to significant injuries or even death
  • Avoid going out during on-going lightning or roaring thunderstorm. One should remain indoors for a minimum of 30 minutes when one sees or hears lightning

It is essential that senior citizens to empower themselves and take necessary measures to guard themselves in periods of distress.
