The family of a 62-year-old woman consented to donate her organs after she was declared brain-dead. The family was aware about the act of organ donation. This noble gesture helped save one life

The patient was admitted to Jupiter Hospital for treatment for an intracranial brain haemorrhage. She was admitted to the hospital on Monday, January 14 and declared brain-dead by the doctors on Thursday, January 17.

The family did not need to be counselled about organ donation as they knew its importance. Her husband, son, sister and brother gave their consent for organ donation

In all, her liver, corneas and skin were retrieved to be donated.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, ZTCC coordinator of Jupiter Hospital, Airudh Kulkarni, “The patient was admitted to the hospital due to intracranial brain haemorrhage, she also suffered from chronic kidney failure. Her kidneys and lungs could not be utilised. The family gave their consent as they were aware about the concept of organ donation beforehand.”

He further said, “In all, the organs which were retrieved were the liver, cornea, and skin. Her liver was retained in Jupiter Hospital. While the corneas were donated to Sahiyara Eye Bank and the skin was donated to the National Burns Centre in Airoli.”
