Mumbai witnesses decline in abortion numbers

The abortion figures have come down in Mumbai compared to last few years. According to BMC’s health department’s data, 33,526 women underwent abortion for various reasons in Mumbai's municipal hospitals in 2016-2017. However, only 24,667 women underwent abortion in the year 2017- 2018

Bombay HC grants permission for abortion in 28th week of pregnancy

As per the information received by the BMC’s health department:

  • In the year 2013-2014, 30,117 women underwent abortion. 27,940 women got it done within 12 weeks and 1,330 women underwent abortion after 12 weeks.
  • In the year 2014-2015, 30,742 women underwent abortion. 28,554 women got it done within 12 weeks and 1,396 women underwent abortion after 12 weeks.
  • In the year 2015-2016, 34,790 women underwent abortion. 32,725 women got it done within 12 weeks and 1332 women underwent abortion after 12 weeks.
  • In the year 2016-2017, 33526 women had an abortion. 32151 women aborted within 12 weeks while 1375 women underwent abortion after 12 weeks.
  • In the year 2017-2018, 22,667 women underwent abortion. 23706 women underwent abortion within 12 weeks while 961 women underwent abortion after 12 weeks.

Dr Mangala Gomare, deputy executive health officer said, “Compared to the last few years, the abortion figures have lowered in Mumbai. To stop female foeticide, PCPNDT act was introduced.  And this law is being implemented properly. Earlier, the abortion numbers were increasing due to early marriages, illicit relationships and so on.”

“In the year 2017-2018, 22,667 women underwent abortion due to various reasons. I n which, 1,287 women underwent abortions due to complications whereas, 23 rape victims and 582 women underwent  abortion due to birth defects in children,” said Dr Asha Advani, Head of the Department of Family Welfare and Planning.
