The 24-hour post-mortem facility will benefit thousands of families who have had to wait for 14-hours post 6:00 pm, until the next day for the post-mortem to be carried out.
In the beginning, post-mortem in cases like murder, dowry death, drowning and medical negligence were not performed post 6:00 pm.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Rajesh Dere, Head of the Forensic Medicine Department at Mumbai’s civic-run Sion hospital said, “Earlier in our hospital the post-mortem facility was available from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Owing to which, a number of families had to wait till next morning to get the body of their relative. But, now we have decided to work in three shifts. Now, the post-mortem will be conducted 24 hours.”
According to the doctors, in the beginning, post-mortems will be carried out in the selected cases like an accident, burns case, and if the death has taken place in the hospital.
In all, 16 police stations come under the jurisdiction of Sion Hospital. The BMC’s decision will help thousands of families from Mumbai and those who come to Mumbai from far off places places to seek medical treatment.
