Mumbai: Minor girl to approach Supreme Court for termination of pregnancy

“Once again helping out a 13-year-old rape survivor with 24 weeks pregnancy for termination of pregnancy,” read a Facebook post by Dr Nikhil Datar, medical director and gynaecologist at Cloudnine hospital on Thursday evening.

The doctor has so far helped more than 15 women to approach the Supreme Court with a similar plea to terminate the pregnancy.

The National Commission of Women (NCW) had recommended in October to the union health ministry that abortions till the 24-weeks of pregnancy should be allowed. After which, in 2014, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare department’s proposed amendment to the present MTP Act.

The proposed act that will be called, The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, 2014 proposed to increase the abortion limit from the present 20 weeks to 24 weeks.
