Mumbai: Leptospirosis claims its fifth victim?

So far, this monsoon, four deaths have been reported due to leptospirosis. Sources inform that a fifth suspected death has occurred due to the zoonotic disease

Three people had died due to leptospirosis in the month of June

  • A 15-year-old boy from Kurla
  • A 27-year-old man from Govandi
  • And, a 21-year-old woman from Malad

On July 13, a 17-year-old from Worli died due to the disease.

The fifth victim was undergoing treatment for leptospirosis at Mumbai’s civic-run Sion Hospital, the person died during the course of treatment.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Padmaja Keskar, Executive Health Officer, BMC, stated, “It is suspected that the patient died during the course of treatment, after contracting leptospirosis. We are unable to provide any further details. The BMC will be releasing its latest data on monsoon-related on July 31. We will be able to provided more information after the report is published.”
