Mumbai: KEM, first civic-run hospital to get portable head CT scan machine

Mumbai's civic-run KEM hospital will soon get its first portable head CT scan machine. This will be the first machine to be installed at a civic-run hospital in Mumbai. This move will benefit thousands of patients visiting the civic hospital for treatment

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to equip the civic-run KEM hospital with state-of-the-art Portable head CT scan machine. This machine will give doctors the added advantage of doing a head CT scan while the patient is being operated. 

Doctors say this machine will be helpful in complicated Neurosurgeries. With this machine in place in KEM hospital, poor patients can be benefited as they will get the facility of CT scan at affordable costs 

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Avinash Supe, Director of major hospitals and Dean of KEM hospital, said, “This machine will be useful for the doctors while performing complicated brain surgery. While doing the surgery, the doctors can easily perform the scan and find out the complication. Within six months, we will have the portable head CT scan machine installed in the hospital.”

Till now, this machine is available in the city’s four major private hospitals. Moreover, patients have to pay 20 to 30 thousand rupees to get the CT scan done. But soon, it will be made available in KEM at an affordable cost.

Dr Ashwinikumar Patil, an associate professor and Neurologist at KEM hospital, said, “With the help of this machine, doctors can perform a CT scan while the patient is being operated. And the images will help the doctors to see how far the injury has affected the brain. This machine can be used for investigating the brain stroke and assess the damage to the nervous system.”
