Mumbai Kamala Mills fire: She lost her life on her birthday

28-year-old Khushi Mehta Bhansali, was celebrating her birthday at the ‘1 Above’ Restaurant in Kamla Mills with her friends. And, on her birthday itself the unfortunate incident occurred which claimed her life


  • A massive fire broke out at 12.30 am at ‘1 Above’ restaurant in Kamala Mills compound, Mumbai. Many people were present in the pub when the fire broke. As per BMC disaster management’s information, at least 14 people lost their lives in the incident and 26 are injured. 
  • On December 28, in the gruesome incident, 28-year-old Khushi Mehta Bhansali, lost her life on her birthday. Khushi was celebrating her birthday with her friends and relatives at ‘1Above’ restaurant. Suddenly the fire broke out and there was a chaos.

According to Babulal Mehta, Khushi’s grandfather, “My granddaughter Khushi lost her life. She was 28-years-old and she was married. She was celebrating her birthday at the restaurant.”

He added, “The hotel administration is irresponsible. There was construction going on the terrace. There was no oxygen or fire extinguisher available.  The police and the BMC administration doesn’t pay any attention to this.”

Dr Rajesh Dhere and his team performed the post-mortem at KEM Hospital. Talking about the unfortunate incident, Dr Dhere said, “The deaths were due to suffocation. These people would have locked themselves in order to escape fire. The smoke must have gone in their nose and mouth leading to their death.”

Dr Harish Pathak, head of forensic department, KEM Hospital said, “The cause of the deaths was suffocation. Burn injuries wasn’t the cause of their death.”

As per the information, when the fire broke at one above restaurant, the way to come out of the hotel is narrow. So, in order to save lives, some people locked themselves in the hotel and some failed to come out of the hotel due to the narrow way.
