Mumbai: Five patients lose their eyesight in botched up cataract surgery

The operations were carried out at the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thakare Trauma Centre on January 04, 2019, several eye operations were carried out on six patients


Upon opening the eye pads on January 05, they were found to have severe inflammation. On January 06, 7 patients were brought to KEM and 7th patient was brought to KEM on January 10.

However after undergoing all the possible therapies its known that 5 out of 7 patients lost the eyesight.

Dr Harbhajan Singh Bawa, Medical Superintendent, Balasaheb Thackrey Truama Care hospital, said, “Seven people on whom the cataract surgeries were performed, developed a bacterial infection soon after the surgery. They were immediately shifted to the KEM hospital. We have shut down the operation theater, where the surgeries were performed. A committee has been set up to conduct an inquiry. The case is still under investigation.”

The names of the all the patients involved are in this unfortunate incident are as follows, Sitasingh, Baludevi Khadka, Fatimabee Shaikh, Ratnama Sanyashi, Rafiq Khan, Gautam Gavane and Sangita Rajbhar.

While Speaking to My Medical Mantra Abhijit Samant, BJP corporator said, “On January 4, cataract surgeries were performed on 7 patients. Immediately after the surgery, the eyes of the patients were a dark red color. They were rushed to the civic-run KEM hospital. The doctors managed to save the eyes of two people. But, 5 people have lost their eyesight. We have raised the question in the BMC, and have demanded action against the culprits.”
