Mumbai: Dr BK Goyal accorded state funeral

Dr BK Goyal passed away on Tuesday at 12 noon at his resident owing to a massive cardiac arrest. The 82-year-old was known to the world for having received top civilian awards — the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. His last rites were performed at Banganga today. He was accorded state funeral

India loses its internationally acclaimed cardiologist to massive cardiac arrest

  • Around 10:00 am, Dr BK Goyal’s dead body was brought to Banganga banganga crematorium. Around 11:00 am, after which he was cremated.
  • Along with Sushilkumar Shinde, a former union home minister, many doctors and his family were present.
  • CM Devendra Fadnavis mourned DR Goyal’s death. He said, “Due to his impeccable work. Not only in India, he made a good impression around the world. It’s a great loss to the medical fraternity.”

Dr Ajay  Chaurasia, Professor and Head of cardiology department, BYL Nair Hospital said, “In the year 1992, I joined Bombay Hospital. I know him since then. He was very kind and lovable. He worshipped his work. He had a unique way of working and  was a ‘One Man Army’.”

He added, “I learnt a lot from him. He wanted to serve his patients till his last breathe. And it happened so.”

Dr Gautam Bhansali, consulting general physician at Bombay Hospital said, “He has done a lot for the patients. His contribution is immense. Owing to which he was awarded by the union government. He was accorded state funeral on Wednesday.”

Dr Nirmal Surya, a seniorconsultant neuro-physician at Bombay hospital and the founder trustee and chairman of Epilepsy Foundation said, “Dr Goyal was a great human being. I know him since the year 1984 when I came to Mumbai.  He was very helpful and he immediately appointed me. He was like a guardian to me and he always stood by me. I have not seen a person like him who has received top civilian awards. I am saddened by his unfortunate demise.”
