Mumbai: Doctors skip lunch break to serve more patients

Doctors from Mumbai’s civic-run Nair Dental Hospital have decided to work during lunchtime as well for the benefit of the patients. The decision has been taken as a number of patients who used to visit the hospital during lunchtime, had to return home without treatment

  • The new system has been implemented from August 01. The Out Patient Department (OPD) will work from 9:00 am to 4.30 pm without a taking break.
  • And now, the doctors will have their lunch rotation wise which will help ensure that OPD’s will function smoothly.

Have you ever been to a government office during lunchtime? Yes, then you must have heard the answer, “Lunch chal raha hai Sahib” (It is lunch time, sir) and you have to wait till the officer finishes his/her lunch.

But, if you happen to visit Nair Dental Hospital, you will find in a totally different environment there. Here in the hospital, the OPD runs without a break.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Neelam Andred, Dean of the Nair Dental Hospital said, “From August 01, we have changed the timetable and have adopted a new roster. The OPD’s will now run without a break. We have scraped the lunch break. Now the doctors on duty have their lunch one by one. Due to which no patients will be seen waiting, as the doctor has gone for lunch.”

Dr Andred further added, “After implementing the new system, we have seen a rise in the number of patients who are visiting our hospital. During normal OPD’s around 600 patients visit the hospital, out of which 200-250 are new patients.”

The doctors and the resident doctors have also backed the decision taken by the administration.

Earlier at Nair Dental Hospital, the doctors and nurses were allowed to go for lunch between 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Owing to which the OPD’s and the case paper window remained closed, forcing the patients to wait in the OPD. A few patients used to leave the hospital without treatment.
