Among them, as high as 90 per cent of them consume tobacco due to various kinds of mental stress.
The prevalence of tobacco consumption is rising not only in youths but also in the transgenders. A survey conducted by the Cancer Patients Aid Association, has revealed these shocking details. Seventy-five per cent of the transgenders, in Mumbai, consume some or the other kind of tobacco. And the consumption of the tobacco is increasing day by day.
But, the positive sign is that five transgenders have pledged not to consume tobacco.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Anita Peter, Executive Director of the Cancer Patients Aid Association, said, “It’s very difficult to reach the transgender community. We conducted medical tests on them to identify whether they are suffering from cancer or not. In the survey, we found that 60 to 65 per cent found to be consuming different forms of tobacco. We counselled them as well. But 90 per cent of the transgenders consume tobacco due to stress.”
She further added, “It’s a positive sign that 5 transgenders have pledged to quit tobacco. So, soon, we will be felicitating them for their decision.”
The survey also stressed on the other contributory factors of the tobacco consumption, such as anxiety, fear of not making enough money for the survival, among others.
