Mumbai: 22 dead, over 39 injured in a stampede at Elphinstone railway station

On Friday, around 10:30 am due to heavy rains, passengers had gathered on Elphinstone and Parel connecting bridge. The stampede took place on foot-over bridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban railway stations


In a rush-hour stampede, 22 killed (18 male, 4 female)  and over 30 injured, as a crowd tried to leave a narrow foot over-bridge connecting two busy train stations. Injured admitted to KEM Hospital in Parel.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra about the unfortunate incident, Niket Kaushik, Railway police commissioner said, “The incident occurred around 10:30 am. It was raining in the morning, so people had taken shelter under the bridge. Suddenly, there was a chaos and stampede and people have lost their lives.”

According to an eyewitness, “Owing to the heavy rains, people gathered on the Elphinstone and Parel connecting bridge. Suddenly, one person started feeling suffocated and to save him one person went and he slipped, after which the incident occurred. 16 to 17 dead bodies have been found and the rest have been taken to KEM Hospital.”

Dr Praveen Bangar, a senior medical officer at the KEM hospital informed, “In a stampede at Elphinstone railway station at foot over bridge,  15 people brought dead.”

Dr Avinash Supe, Dean of KEM hospital informed, “22 people (18 men and 4 women) lost their lives.”
