Milk adulteration: FDA to inspect 13 dairy companies across Maharashtra

On October 17, surprise checks were conducted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on milk tankers entering Mumbai. On the five toll nakas, which are crucial entry points to the city, namely Vashi, Airoli, Dahisar, LBS and Mulund, investigations were done on 227 tankers. In the course of this investigation, 9,25,000 litres of milk was checked for adulteration out of which around 19,250 litres milk was found to be adulterated

The Maharashtra FDA has taken action against 227 tankers which were carrying adulterated milk. After this shocking revelation the FDA and state government have turned their attention toward the milk plants and dairy companies in the state.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Pallavi Darade, Maharashtra FDA Commissioner said, “Now, in order to prevent any further instances of milk adulteration; we are going to investigate milk plants and dairy companies across Mumbai and Maharashtra. We have decided to conduct investigations across 13 dairy companies across Maharashtra. The state government and the FDA will conduct checks in milk plants in Turbhe, Satara, Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik.”

Dr Darade added, “The instances of milk adulteration are on the rise. Nearly 9,25,000 litres of milk were checked for milk adulteration from which we have found 19,250 nineteen litres of milk was adulterated. We have taken action against the 227 milk tankers which were transporting adulterated milk.”
