Midnight drama: Pregnant woman rescued from stuck elevator in Sassoon Hospital


  • The expectant mother, with a doctor and a few others, had got stuck inside a hospital lift for over 30 minutes.
  • According to the fire brigade officials, the lift had got stuck between the ground and the first floor.

It was around 3 am on Tuesday morning, October 16, when the fire brigade control in Pune received a frantic call from Pune’s state-run Sassoon General Hospital. The call was related to a fire breaking out in the hospital, but instead about an elevator stopped working. The lift had a few patients and doctors who were inside it who were stuck in between the hospital floors midway.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Vijay Bhillare, Station Duty officer of Naidu fire station said. “When we reached there, we could barely see their faces. One doctor, one pregnant woman, and a few others were stuck inside. We had to pull them out of the lift, which was a very challenging task.”

He further added, “First, we pulled out all the people those who were trapped inside. As the woman who was pregnant, she couldn’t step onto the stool. So, we lifted her and safely brought her out. Female doctors who were there helped us a lot. Finally, after half-an-hour, the lady was successfully pulled out.”

Dr Ajay Chandanwale, Dean of Sassoon Hospital Pune, said, “This incident occurred last night, the people who were stuck have successfuly been rescued. The lift has been repaired and is now operational once again.”
