Marathon runner’s wife donates organs of brain-dead husband in Pune

Wife donates organs of brain dead husband, saving the lives of four people. A 43-year-old, marathon runner from Pune, was taking a walk while he met with an accident and was declared brain dead eventually. The wife of this marathon runner gave the consent for the organ donation on Friday, October 06 at Jehangir hospital in Pune.

Prashant (name changed) was admitted to Jehangir hospital immediately after he met with an accident. He was in comatose state. He also had multiple blood clots in the brain and was in a critical condition for the last four days. He was declared brain-dead on October 05, following which organ retrieval was done at Jehangir hospital.

The heart was transported via green corridor to Mumbai’s Fortis hospital. The heart recipient is a 23-year-old male from Pune. Dr Sanjeev Jadhav, who performed the heart transplant said, “The patient was frequently getting admitted in the hospital due to repeated heart failure and was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy.”

The liver of the brain-dead patient was allotted to a 71-year-old male patient from Sahyadri hospital in Pune. While one kidney was allotted to a patient from Ruby hall, the other one was allotted to patient form Jehangir hospital.

Pune has witnessed 43 cadaver donations this year. It has seen 43 kidney transplants, along with 40 liver transplants and 8 heart transplants in 2017.
