Major blast at Bharat Petroleum plant in Chembur, few injured

Major fire breaks out at Bharat Petroleum plant in Mahul, Chembur. Around 9 fire trucks are at the spot

  • Level- III fire breaks out at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited-RMP plant in Chembur; 9 fire tenders, 2 foam tenders and 2 jumbo tankers have been pressed into service at the spot.
  • The incident reportedly took place at around 3:00 pm.
  • Fire confirmed to hydrogen tank in BPCL Refinery, states Fire brigade chief.
  • Nearby buildings were jolted after blast.
  • No casualties reported till now.
  • The vibrations of the blast extended 3 to 4kms, locals said they felt their building vibrate from the impact of the blast.
  • Windows of nearby buildings shattered due to the to the vibrations.
  • The explosion was so intense that tremors were felt till Deonar.
  • Residents in the area reported hearing a ‘blast-like sound just before the fire broke out.
  • Police is trying to evacuate people living in the vicinity
  • Seven fire engines, two foam tenders, two jumbo tankers have been pressed into service.
  • One injured worker has been brought into Shatabdi Hospital, Govandi.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Pradeep Jadhav, Head of peripheral hospital said, “A worker aged around 29-30 years has been brought to the hospital he has fractured his legs, due to the fire he jumped from the building and injured his legs.”

While speaking to the press Tukaram Kate, Shiv Sena MLA, said, “There are few workers who are feared trapped inside the plant.”

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, DCP Shahaji Umap, said, “We have not yet received any information about how many people have been injured. But, there are a few workers who were inside at the time of blast who have been reportedly injured.”
