In yet another shocking incident, which has come in the light, three doctors from Sangli, Maharashtra have been booked for performing an illegal abortion.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, DYSP, Ashok Virkar said, “We had arrested Dr Rupali Chogule on September 17, and her husband Dr Vijaykumar Chougule on September 18, in connection with the illegal abortion racket. Dr Vijay Chogule will be kept in police custody for six days. The doctors were performing the abortion procedure without a license. In the First Information Report (FIR) we have mentioned about seven cases. But, the number could be more. As per our investigation, the women who have been operated are from Kolhapur, Sangli and Karnataka.”

DYSP Virkar further added, “Dr Rupali Chougule was performing the abortion surgeries since the past one year. We are in the process of calling the women for investigation, who have undergone the abortion procedure in this hospital. We have seized case papers and register from the hospital. This could provide a vital clue in the investigation. Seven women on whom the illegal abortions were done have come forward and recorded their statements. Dr Swapnil Jamdale is still absconding.”

Police sources on the condition of anonymity, confirmed to My Medical Mantra, that the investigation is being done with an angle of female foeticide as well.

On the other hand, the Sangli Municipal Corporation has set up 10 teams of doctors, to scrutinise the hospitals and the nursing homes in the city.
