Maharashtra FDA seizes gutkha worth crores

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration seized gutka by raiding Mumbai and the nearby areas. This action was taken against the sale of Gutka after the ban


Even after the ban imposed on gutkha by the state government, it was available at many places. In the areas in and across Mumbai, from April to September, in the span of six months, 46 places were raided by acting promptly acting on the complaints received. Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken this action. In this, the gutkha worth 1.24 crore 11 thousand 325 has been seized.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Shailesh Adhav, FDA Co-Commissioner (Food) said, “The administration is trying to curb the sale of tobacco products like Gutkha. The gutkha which costs approximately Rs 14.41 thousand 325 was seized from various parts of Mumbai. Still, the sale on illegal gutkha hasn’t stopped completely.”

Food and Drugs Assistant Commissioner (Food) B U Patil has given information about the amount of gutkha seized in the span of months:

  • April to July: 33 raids, gutkha worth Rs 86 lakh 8 thousand 179 seized
  • August: 5 raids, gutkha worth Rs 17 lakhs 1 thousand 970 seized
  • September: 8 raids, gutkha worth Rs 21 lakhs 1 thousand 176 seized
  • October (up to 15): 2 raids, gutkha worth Rs 42 lakhs seized

Complaints about the sale of gutkha were received from Mumbai’s B, C and D ward. The action was taken accordingly and a large amount of gutkha was seized, informed Patil.
