She initially would counsel people about eye donation and eventually entered into the field of organ donation. She was also the recipient of the best transplant coordinator in the year 2016.
Dr Astrid Lobo Gajiwala, Director ROTTO-SOTTO, Western Region, Mumbai received the ‘best state award’ from Dr Harsh Vardhan at the ceremony.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra Dr Astrid Lobo Gajjawala said “It’s a matter of pride for all of us, that Maharashtra has been conferred with an award from central government for efforts taken to raise awareness about organ donation. This award belongs to all those doctors, nurses, NGOs who have worked tirelessly to spread awareness among people.”
Donor families, best-performing states, best performing hospitals, best-performing transplant coordinators and states that have shown excellent performance in uploading maximum data in the national registry were felicitated and awarded at the event by the dignitaries.
Dr Harsh Vardhan and Ashwini Kumar Choubey also administered the Organ Donation Pledge to the people present at the event.
Dr Harsh Vardhan urged NGOs, CSOs, non-state stakeholders, community and religious leaders and opinion influencers within communities to become ambassadors of organ donation and enthuse and inspire people regarding this noble act.
From November 2018 to October 2019 (the period considered for the award) the data for Maharashtra is as follows:
Organs retrieved and allocated: 446
Organs transplanted: 449 (including those received from other States).
Brain stem deaths identified: 193
Brain stem deaths converted for transplant: 153
Awareness activities: 387 (ROTTO-SOTTO, the ZTCCs and our associated NGOs.)
