People from Mahad taluka, in Raigad district, Maharashtra, will never forget that fateful day in their whole life. In the wee hours of August, 3rd 2016, a state transport bus ferrying passengers had met with a tragic accident.

The British-era bridge suddenly collapsed on the Savitri River, in Mahad, and the bus with more than 30 passengers was washed away.

The tragedy could have been bigger and the death toll would have increased, if no one had spotted the incident. But, because of one man named Basant Kumar, the state administration managed to save a number of lives.

Basant, who worked in a garage nearby, was the first one to reach to the spot. He immediately alerted the district administration and stopped the vehicles which were en route to Goa.

Basant Kumar was lauded for his brave efforts, as his presence of mind and alertness saved numerous lives.

But life has taken an unfortunate turn for Basant, as he is now suffering from a spinal aliment. He has been recently diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis a condition which affects the spine.

Symptoms include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. This condition has left him jobless. Due to his illness he had to forgo his job. Doctors say, his condition cannot be cured, but can only be managed with the help of medicines.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Basant says, “With every passing day the spine issue kept aggravating. I met a doctor from ‘Sai Sneh’ hospital Pune. They diagnosed me with ankylosing spondylitis. Doctors told me my illness will never be cured. I was shocked, now what? How can I work? How to fend for myself? A number of questions went through my head?”

Basant further stated, “But I am thankful to Maharashtra government, especially Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan. I am told that, state government will bear the cost of my treatment. I used to earn 25,000 rupees earlier, but now I can’t do much work. And the treatment costs about 25,000 thousand per month.”

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, State Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan said, “A number of innocent people had died in Mahad bridge accident. Basant Kumar, risked his life, and saved many. Now he is in dire need of monetary help for his treatment. The state government will bear all his medical expenses. And Dr Bhojraj, a renowned spine surgeon from Mumbai will treat him.”spinal ailment,

Meanwhile Dr Ganesh Jadgdale, Orthopaedic consultant from Sai Sneh hospital, Pune, said, “Basant is suffering from ankylosing spondylitis. This condition is normally seen in youngsters. In this condition, the patient feels excruciating pain in the spine region, they can’t move as well. There is an injection which gives momentary relief to the patient but it is very expensive. So I have advised Basant for physiotherapy session.”
