Shaikh got married about a month ago in Pune and says that his relatives and friends just couldn’t stop asking him as to what he has done to himself. “When I go out anywhere now, people just can’t believe it is me. I have gained a lot of self-confidence and feel a lot more independent now,” he said.

Shaikh was an obese kid since childhood. In class ten, he weighed an elephantine 165kgs. “I couldn’t control my hunger. I just couldn’t. I ate as much as I wanted because I had an insatiable hunger,” he added.

At the age of 17, in 2012, he approached Dr Shashank Shah in Pune. “I had been to many doctors. I tried everything from counselling to gyms, walking but, everything was in vain. But when I went to Dr Shah, I was more than just happy. He has changed my life so positively,” he said.

Dr Shah, too, is in awe of Shahrukh. “Shahrukh had major complications. He couldn’t control his hunger. He could eat around 200 pani-puris if he was hungry. Hence, we had to operate him. But for me, the success was, when he told me that he could control his hunger well and that he was very confident now,” said Dr Shah, Director of Lapro Obeso Centre and a consultant surgeon  at Hinduja Healthcare Services.
