#KolkataBridgeCollapse: Flyover collapse in south Kolkata, several feared trapped

Several people are feared trapped after a portion of a bridge collapsed in south Kolkata this evening, authorities said. The Majerhat Bridge on busy Diamond Harbour Road reportedly collapsed around 4:45 pm on Tuesday


The bridge collapsed over a rail track in the Alipore area of the city. The bridge stood over some rail tracks in Alipur, one of the very old areas of the city. The area is surrounded by half-constructed buildings, scaffolding and pillars.

Witnesses said that no rescue team could reach the spot till 5 pm and locals were trying help the injured.

At least 10 fire tenders and ambulances were rushed to the spot. Many vehicles got trapped as the flyover collapsed. According to eyewitnesses, several people on motorbikes also got trapped under the flyover

The area has been cordoned off as the rescue operations began. People were asked to vacate the area at the earliest as authorities feared that remaining part of the flyover could also collapse.

“Our team is focused on relief and rescue work. Our priority is relief and rescue. Rest of the investigation will be done later,” said West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee regarding the Majerhat bridge collapse in South Kolkata.
