Know how to use a public washroom safely

Using a public washroom can be uncomfortable, as people are hesitant to enter it, due to the fear of contracting germs and bacteria. Here, experts give you tips to use a public washroom in most hygienic way


Public restrooms are not always the cleanest places to visit. Even a clean public restroom can harbour many germs just by the fact that so many people use the same facility all day long. Owing to which, experts advise to follow a proper hygiene.

Dr Niranjan Chavan, Professor, Gynaecology Department at LTMG (Sion) Hospital said, “One can contract infections, jaundice, cholera, hepatitis, typhoid, dysentery and Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), due to the lack of hygiene in the public toilets.”

Dr Chavan says:

  • Clean the toilet seat with jet spray before sitting
  • Place tissues on the toilet seat
  • Wash your hands with hand wash, after going to the bathroom.This will cut down significantly on the transfer of bacteria and germs
  • Do not put your belongings on the bathroom floor
  • Maintain self-hygiene
  • Keep the environment clean

Dr Pratit Samdani, General Physician from Jaslok Hospital said, “It’s our responsibility to make sure that we do not catch any diseases, by using public washrooms. As many toilets lack tissues, soaps, water and sanitisers. So, follow a proper hygiene as females have higher chances of getting infections. ”

According to Dr Samdani:

  • Clean your hands, use a hand sanitiser and tissue paper while flushing and flush properly
  • Opt for a clean washroom
  • Limit your contact with surfaces, such as door handles and sinks
  • Use antiseptic napkins
