Know how to deal with déjà vu

Déjà vu is ‘already seen’ and refers to the feeling you get when you feel you have been somewhere before or done something already, that you really haven't, and you know this strong feeling is not warranted - that is, you are aware the feeling isn't true. Here, the experts tell you about how to get rid of the déja vu feeling

  • Déjà vu, the strong feeling that you have experienced a current situation, even though you haven’t experienced it before.
  • As per experts, it is common and almost everybody experiences déjà vu at some point of time and they advice to get it treated if it is persistent.  

 Dr Avinash Desousa, co-founder of Desousa Foundation, explained, “Déja vu can occur at any age. Sometimes, people see themselves entering a mall or a building and feel they have been there before. But, they have never been there. Also, people dream and then see it occurring in the real life.”

He added, “If it happens repeatedly. Then, it indicates abnormality in the temporal lobes of the brain. Often, it will be accompanied by images, hallucinations and delusions. Déjà vu phenomenon can be seen in epileptic patients and the patients with panic disorder and schizophrenia. All these disorders are linked genetically. So, threat the underline disorder.”

 Dr Sagar Mundada, psychiatrist and youth-wing president, of Indian Medical Association (IMA)-Maharashtra Chapter said, “It is a common phenomenon and almost everybody experiences it at some point of time.”

As per Preeti Naravane, Counseling Psychologist based in Mumbai, “Our memory and the way our brain functions isn’t 100 per cent efficient, which could lead to a harmless occasional déja vu.”

Mumbai-based clinical psychologist said Aarti Shroff said, “Déja vu is generally a state that is fleeting. However, if it persists, one must consult a neurologist. Also, persistent déja vu has been linked with epilepsy and schizophrenia.”

Shroff lists out some vital tips to deal with it:

  • Take deep breathes to normalise the heart rate.
  • Mindfulness activities that focus on a particular object while screening out other distractions can help. During this activity one has a single focus and all the attention is centred around the object.
