To tackle this problem, at Sir JJ Group of Hospitals cancer OPD, patients will be detected for head and neck cancer and treatment will be given to them. For this doctors from the hospital’s ENT department will be trained on how to identify cancer and provide care post-surgery

JJ hospital doctors to be trained to detect and treat head and neck cancer

In Mumbai, the percentage of patients suffering from head and neck cancer is rising. If the cancer is detected on time a person’s life can be saved.

In January 2018, a contract was signed between JJ Hospital and Prince Aly Khan Hospital to detect and treat cancer patients.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Shrinivas Chavan, Professor and Head of ENT department at Sir JJ Group of Hospitals said, “In the patients who come to seek treatment, we notice symptoms of cancer. We then refer these patients to cancer department. If they are not treated at their right time, their life can be at risk.”

Maharashtra witnesses large number of deaths due to cancer, and the government has taken matter this seriously. For this they have started a special facility for head and neck cancers at JJ Hospital.

Dr Kailash Surnare, Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Prince Aly Khan Hospital said, “Training regarding how to identify cancer and how to look after patients post-surgery, will be given to doctors via special classes which have been started.”

This initiative was started under the guidance of Dr Sultan Pradhan, senior oncologist and Head of Department at Prince Aly Khan Hospital.

Dr Chavan further said, “Under this contract, there will be a special cancer OPD which will be open every Wednesday. Patients detected with cancer will be immediately be given treatment. Cancer surgeries will be performed every Thursday in the hospital. Till now 50 patients have been successfully operated upon.

Dr Surnare added, “In this OPD, free surgeries will conducted by doctors of JJ Hospital and Prince Aly Khan Hospital through the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana.”
