Organ donation is the need the hour. As, one organ donor can save up to eight lives. Similarly, the New Year began on a positive note as organs of 7 brain-dead people were donated, which gave a new lease of life to 18

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Urmila Mahajan, current coordinator of ZTCC said, “From January 1 to 31, organs of 7 brain-dead people were donated, which saved 18 lives. In this, 8 kidneys, 7 livers and 3 hearts were donated.”

From January 27 to 29, five have got a new lease of life. Due to the organ donation of two women in Nanavati Hospital, four people have got a new lease of life.

Shraddha Yadav (name changed), 40, was undergoing treatment at Nanavati Hospital. She met with an accident and suffered head injury and was declared brain-dead. According to the rules of the organ transplantation committee, the liver was donated to a person undergoing treatment at Nanavati Hospital.

On January 29, 63-year-old Rekha Naik’s liver and kidneys were donated. Rekha was declared brain-dead after she suffered from a head injury. The liver was donated to Fortis Hospital, Mulund, one kidney at Bombay Hospital and the other at Jaslok Hospital.
