India: ‘Organ donation rate is 0.58 per million population’

2,00,000 recipients are waiting for kidney transplant only 8,000 donors are there. The demand for organs and tissues for transplantation is far more than availability of the organs like liver, heart and cornea as well

Organ donation is the need of the hour. So, while answering the questions on organ donation Anupriya Patel, the Minister Of State In The Ministry Of Health And Family Welfare replied in Loksabha stated, “The demand for organs and tissues for transplantation is far more than availability of the organs.”

According to Patel, The exact global ranking of India in terms of organ donation and transplantation is not known. However, deceased organ donation rate in India is approximately 0.58 per million population.

“As per the data available with National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), 54, 110, 235 and 190 heart transplants and 720, 1024, 1368 and 805 kidney transplants have been undertaken in the year 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017, respectively,” said Patel.

Dr Shreerang Bichhu, Head of Nephrology department at Bombay Hospital said, “When it comes to live donations, one of the major obstacle is  nuclear family. Since, the number of people in the family are less. There are lesser chances of finding a matching donor. Moreover,compared to men, women come forward to donate their organs.”
