Dr B K Goyal was an internationally acclaimed interventional cardiologist and medical educationist. He practised as a cardiologist at Bombay Hospital since 1966. Dr Goyal was the only cardiologist outside the United States to have the unique distinction of being appointed as the honorary consultant cardiologist to the world famous Texas Heart Institute, Houston.
Dr Goyal was the Honorary Director Medical Education and Research and Chief Cardiologist at the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences (1985 – 2009) and former Director-Professor of Cardiology of J J Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College, Mumbai, which he served in an honorary capacity for 25 years.
He was the member of executive council of the University of Bombay and presently is the Member of the senate of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS). He has served as a member of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare and National Council for blood transfusion.
Dr Goyal was the honorary chairman of the renowned Haffkine Institute at Mumbai for fourteen years and under his stewardship the institute successfully developed indigenous polio vaccines which was duly approved by WHO for the first time in the country.
He has been mainly responsible for the establishment of Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences, a post-graduate medical institute imparting high grade medical education in various specialities and super-specialities.
In recognition of the public service rendered by him he was appointed as the Honorary Sheriff of Bombay in 1980. He was conferred Padma Shri in 1984, Padma Bhushan in 1989 and Padma Vibhushan in 2005. He has presided over various international conferences in cardiology and is the recipient of many national and international awards. He has been invited to deliver several prestigious orations. He has around 50 publications in national and international journals.
He has been connected with the Indian Council of Medical Research, WHO and the Union Public Service Commission. He was conferred Purandare Award by the Indian Medical Association and Nanda International Award for his outstanding contribution in the field of cardiology.
He was among the nine distinguished Indians from different walks of life who were decorated with Scroll of Honour during 150th year celebrations of the University of Mumbai by President of India.
Dr Goyal was felicitated with Global Award for outstanding contribution in the field of Cardiology by prestigious Priyadarshni Academy. He was also the Vice Chairman of Indian Red Cross Society Headquarters at Delhi for five years.
He was the Chief Guest to deliver the convocation address at the Convocation of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.
Recently, he has been honoured with the ‘Life Achievement Award’ towards the contribution to the growth, welfare and service of the country by Union Bank of India as a part of Bank’s Foundation Day celebration.
