Sadnaya, a 10 month old girl had started losing weight and was frequently ill. Despite being 10 months old her weight was only 5 kg. When she was 6 months old she was diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriousus (PDA).  PDA is a heart condition. It is an opening between two blood vessels leading from the heart some babies may develop this problem soon after birth.

In this disease abnormal blood flow occurs between two of the major arteries connected to the heart. It is important to treat these babies soon after the diagnosis. The delay may result in death.

There were many hurdles in treating Sadnaya. She was underweight. Usually open heart surgery is performed on the underweight babies. In advanced hospitals, the device technique is used to close the arteries but in city like Nashik such surgery hadn’t been performed. But the challenge was taken up by Dr Lalit Gunvant Labankar from Gunvant Child Care Heart Care Centre. He managed to close arteries using a device technique. In this technique he used a probe which was inserted into her thigh the device and the arteries were closed

“Diseases such as PDA can be treated without open heart surgery. Device or balloon technique can be used for this disease,” said Dr Lalit Lavankar.  Sadnaya was discharged after 48 hours of surgery. It has been a month since the surgery has been performed and she has been responding well to medications.
