Today at the international clinical nutrition 2017, a conference of nutritionists, said that the need of immunonutrition should be stressed and its importance was widely discussed by nutritionists gathered here from across the globe.

The two day conference in which is taking place in Mumbai, with nutritionists from different parts of the globe debating about how immunonutrition is the need of the hour. In the debate, nutritionists agreed that the immunonutrition can greatly benefit patients in ICU or who have just undergone a surgery.

Dr Ramakrishnan N, Director Critical Care Services, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai and Dr Shishir Shetty, Senior Surgical Consultant and Head Oncology services, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai were the two prominent doctors who lead the debate. They put forward their point of views on the need of immunonutrition.

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Ramakrishnan N, director critical care services Apollo Hospitals, Chennai said, “A study has proven that for critical patients in ICU and has underwent surgery, immunonutrition benefits a lot. The study has shown that pre and post-surgery when the patients were given immunonutrition, the improvement rate was good. So while treating such patient’s immunonutrition comes handy to improve their condition. “

While commenting on the use of immunonutrition Dr Shishir Shetty said “To simplify it, I will give example of a garlic. Do you add garlic in each recipe just because it is good for health? Immunonutrition is like this is. It is beneficiary but for the surgical patients. Its use should be monitored and defined”

The annual International Clinical Nutrition Conference, is organised by Apollo Hospital has been inaugurated in Mumbai. This is the 9th year of the conference and this is year’s theme is ‘Connecting Evidence to Clinical Nutrition Practice’. The conference aims at highlighting the vital role of nutritionists in healthcare and it provides a platform to exchange the core knowledge for distinguished Clinical nutritionists and dieticians from around the globe.

While underlining the importance of the nutritionists in healthcare system, Dr Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “Nutritionists have to realise the importance of their role in healthcare system. They have potential to make difference in people’s lives and lead them towards healthy lifestyle. Their time intervention at the right time makes a lot of difference in people’s lives.”

While addressing over 550 nutritionists, Dr Preetha Reddy also called on to revive traditional Indian healthcare values in modern system. “Our traditional healthcare values are forgotten. Give it a thought how we can incorporate Ayurvedic diet system in modern system.”‘ she said.

The key role of a nutritionist in a doctor’s team was highlighted by Dr Anupam Sonal, Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals Group. In the inaugural address he said,” The role of nutritionists now is more vital than ever before, because world has changed rapidly. We are what we eat. So nutritionists’ role is more relevant. There are many experts in various fields of medicine in a team of doctors trying to cure a patient. But the team is completed only after the inclusion of nutritionist.” he said.

Dr Preetha Reddy also mentioned the importance of nutritionists in clinical healthcare in her remarks. “There are several studied which show that results are better when a doctor is accompanied by a nutritionist.” she said.

Over 550 nutritionists from 10 countries have gathered together for two days of conference. Before the conference 75 research abstracts were received. Five amongst those have been selected by juries to be awarded in the conference.
