Sonography

In reply to the Legislative Assembly, Dr Deepak Sawant, the state health minister said, “The meeting of the expert committee constituted under the chairmanship of the Central Board of Directors of Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPNDT)  was held in Delhi. The committee is of the opinion that, the ‘Active Tracker’ is not useful to stop sex determination. Therefore, such devices will not be installed on the sonography centres across the state. In order to prevent female foeticide, the government had planned to use ‘Active Tracker’ in the sonography machine in the state.”

However, this proposal of the government has been protested by the radiologists.

About the ‘Active Tracker’:

  • A chip was installed in the active tracker
  • The ultrasound would have worked as a set top box within a sonography machine
  • The server of this device was placed with PCPNDT committee in the collector’s office
  • The woman’s entire sonography would appear on the server through the device

Speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Jignesh Thakker, past president, radiologist and imaging association said, “We opposed it because it affected the radiologist’s rights. Accordingly, the state government constituted a committee under the chairmanship of The United Nations National Population Fund (UNFTA). The committee had said that a new device is not required. We welcome this decision.”
