How is a double chin formed? Know about its causes

Seeing a double chin in the mirror is never a nice sight, and it's usually a reminder that you need to shed a few pounds. But the common condition can be caused by a number of factors, not just weight gain


A double chin occurs when a layer of fat around your neck sags. When it sags it causes a wrinkle, which gives the illusion of having two chins.

But the fact is, you do not have to be overweight for this to happen to you.

Factors which could be a cause for the formation of a double chin:


The skin can start to lose its elasticity as the body ages, which can lead to the appearance of extra or saggy skin that may contribute to a double chin.

Diet and weight

While weight gain is not always the cause of a double chin, it can contribute to it. A diet high in calories, processed foods, and unhealthful fats may influence weight gain and a double chin as well.


No one’s body fat is distributed quite the same way, but by and large, if you have a heavier frame, you probably have a larger face. That’s why, for people who have a true submental fat deposit and not just extra skin.

The theory is that if your overall body mass index declines, some of it will come from that little pocket just below your jaw. While this works for many people, genetics also appear to play a pesky role in double chin development

Genes may play a role in people developing a double chin. Anyone with a family history of skin with little elasticity or double chins might be more likely to develop one themselves.


Poor posture can weaken the muscles of the neck and chin. This may contribute to a double chin over time, as the surrounding skin loses its elasticity when the muscles are not used.

While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Prajwali Sonkamble, a general physician, informed, “A double chin is caused due to the accumulation of fat under the chin. There are many reasons for this, a thyroid problem or a sinus infection can be caused a double chin. Even genetic factors can lead to a double chin. This condition can be treated, but you must know the reasons which are causing it. Medicines and treatment can hwlp you get rid of it.”

Eating right and being physically active are a few examples of good habits that can help your body stay fit and young. But this is also true for our facial muscles which tend to lose their firmness as we age.

Dr Debraj Shome, the  Director of The Esthetic Clinics, stated,  “Indians age in a different way than Caucasians (whites). The lower part of their face and neck are affected with symptoms of ageing, once they cross the age of 50. These areas become heavier with fat deposits, their distinction is blurred, and they tend to appear as one homogenous mass.”
