The government of Himachal Pradesh plans to make it compulsory for doctors of all hospitals in the state to prescribe Generic Medicines to the patients, said Health Minister Vipin Parmar.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Vipin Parmar, the Health Minister of Himachal Pradesh said, “Soon, the state government will enact a law regarding the prescription of the Generic Medicines in the state. HP will be the first state in the country to form a law like this. We have already issued the oral instructions to all the doctors.”
Health minister further stated, “This move is being considered to make medicines affordable for the poor people. Under the proposed law, if Generic medicines are not available. Only then, the doctor is allowed to prescribe branded medicines. But, he has to mention why he is prescribing branded medicines on the prescription.”
He said, “In HP, there is a scarcity of Generic Medicines stores. We are going to write to PM Modi, to bring this to his notice. Our aim is to make medicines affordable for patients.”
PM Modi had also appealed to doctors to prescribe Generic Medicines in his speech. After which, medical council of India had also written a letter to the doctors regarding the same.
While speaking to My Medial Mantra Kailash Tandale, President of registered pharmacy association said, “Generic Medicines will definitely help the poor patients. As, the branded medicines are expensive and poor people can’t afford it.”
He added, “We have to wait and watch whether the Maharashtra government takes a concrete step regarding the same.”
