We all have a habit of keeping our wallet in the back pocket of our pants. But, after reading this news, you will definitely think about changing this habit from your daily routine. No one should keep their wallet in the back pocket, not because someone might just steal it, but because keeping the wallet in your back pocket takes a toll on your hip and spine.
While keeping the wallet inside the back pocket, we tend to forget that we sit on it; we do this a number of times without realising it and have been doing so for several years now. But, this habit might have a detrimental effect on your hip, spine and sitting posture.
While speaking to My Medical Mantra, Dr Shreerang Limaye, an orthopaedic surgeon from Devayani Hospital, Pune, said, “When men keep their wallet inside the back pocket, it creates pressure on the hips. The sustained pressure can cause a block in the blood vessels which supply blood to the hip. Owing to which, people might feel numbness in the legs. Over time, the burden on the joints can cause degeneration and the hips are likely to fail as well.”
Doctors say degeneration, agitation of the nerve in the back and temporary pain can cause discomfort to a person.
Dr Ganesh Jagdale, an orthopaedic doctor from Pune’s Sai Sneh hospital said, “Lots of people have a habit of keeping their wallet inside the back pocket. Visiting cards, bank cards, make the wallet too heavy. Keeping the wallet in the back pocket can change the position of the spine, which leads to back pain. There is a sack called ‘bursa’ near the hip, due to overburdening, it can swell. This is called as ‘bursaitis.'”
Doctors say a simple way to avoid pain is to keep the wallet in the front pocket. Experts also state that even after driving for 30 minutes, with a wallet in the back pocket can cause discomfort to a person.
