Many ads claim that they know that one secret to shedding stubborn belly fat. But most if not all of them are only intended to lure people and tricking them into buying all sorts of products.
However, there is actually one trick that is guaranteed to help you eliminate belly fat and prevent its accumulation and it will not cost you anything.
Avoid sitting too much!
That’s right. The real problem why we tend develop a flabby belly is because we sit too much. Many studies, books and literature have pointed this out again and again, but most of use just ignore it.
Claire Wheeler, M.D., Ph.D. and Diane A. Welland, M.S., R.D. pointed out in their book ‘The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Belly Fat Weight Loss: The Total Program for a Flatter Stomach and Better Health’ that we should only spend fewer than six or seven hours sitting on a chair every single day.
According to them, sitting down too much in a day is like not getting enough exercise and this has drastic and negative effects to the body, such as the accumulation of belly fat.
In Mark Langowski’s book ‘Eat This, Not That! for Abs: The Ultimate Six-Pack in Less Than Six Weeks—and a Flat Belly for Life,’ he also reiterated the same message about too much sitting.
However, it should be noted that he also cited too little sleep and too much stress as other reasons for weight gain, especially in the abdominal area.
Visceral fat is the type of fat that is packed between the abdominal organs and is actually the one that we generally refer to as belly fat. According to Healthline, visceral fat is also called ‘active fat’ because it actively increases the risk of health problems.
The amount of visceral fat is not that easy to determine because this type of fat is tucked inside and stored within the abdominal cavity. Doctors need to conduct a CT scan or an MRI just to definitively diagnose visceral fat, but a simple way to know if you have far too much of it is by measuring your waist. Experts say 40 inches or larger indicate great risk of health problems.
If you are trying to shed belly fat off your body or if you are preventing its accumulation but you are always too busy to hit the gym, just avoid sitting too much will do the trick. It may take a long time before you could see the results but at least it is guaranteed to help you with your problem.
Wheeler and Welland said that for people who have jobs that require them to sit at a desk all day, they should get up and move around even for just a few minutes each hour.
Walking around and stretching for 3 to 5 minutes would already suffice. The simple gesture not only reactivates leg muscles, it also “keeps the metabolic fires burning.”
The two authors also recommended spending breaks and lunchtime on your feet just so you won’t experience the sluggish effects of sitting for too long.
They added that instead of sending an email or a text message to a colleague, it’s best to move around and speak with them yourself. Picking up mail instead of waiting for it to be delivered to your table also helps.
“You don’t need to work up a sweat, you just need to move,” the authors pointed out.
Taking the stairs instead of the elevator is also recommended. Just be sure that you have ample time to do this because you don’t want to be late for an important meeting while trying to shed belly fat or preventing its accumulation.
