Health ministry to soon replace TT vaccine with TD vaccine

In accordance with the recommendation of the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (NTGI), the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has decided to replace the Tetanus Toxoid (TT) with Tetanus and Adult Diphtheria vaccine (Td) in the Universal Immunisation Programme

At present, TT booster doses at 10 and 16 years of age and two doses of TT or single booster dose TT given to pregnant women. These will be replaced by Td vaccine toward the end of this year.

In this regard, the states will need to plan for training of health workers, medical officers and programme managers for ensuring its smooth implementation. The commencement of supplies of Td vaccine will begin soon and IEC materials, training packages etc. will be shared in due course of time.

Joint Secretary, Vandana Gurwani appealed to the National Health Mission Directors, saying, “I request you to kindly direct the concerned officials to take note of this upcoming development and make the required preparations. I am sure that with your constant support as always, we will be able to expand the coverage of the vaccines and protect our nation against vaccine preventable diseases more than ever.”
