Gadchiroli bags award for highest number of male sterilisation surgeries

Gadchiroli district is identified as tribal district which does not have adequate health facilities. But, it has left all districts behind by bagging an award by ministry of health and family welfare, for an exemplary contribution in male sterilisation

In the year 2016 to 17, 3,500 male sterilisation surgeries were performed in Gadchiroli district. Due to vasectomy and awareness, Gadchiroli district has been awarded by the central government for an exemplary contribution in male sterilisation.

Sunil Madavi, additional district health officer, Gadchiroli said, “In this year, highest number of male sterilisation surgeries were performed in Gadchiroli. Health officers created awareness about male vasectomy from house to house. We discussed and counseled people.”

Few years ago, the scenario was different in Gadchiroli. Only 4 to 5 per cent of men opted for sterilisation. The number was woman was highest. But now the scenario has changed. “In the last few years, the number of vasectomy has reached up to 50 per cent from 5 per cent. After sterilisation, women face problems for a week to two months. Owing to which, they do not get their daily wages. But, sterilistaion of men is done in a day.  Due to which, they are coming forward.”
