Former Prime Minister and BJP veteran Atal Bihari Vajpayee breathed his last at All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital. The 93-year-old Bharatiya Janata Party leader was admitted to the hospital on June 11 and he was put on life support system by doctors

The 93-year-old BJP patriarch and former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee departed from this world on Thursday afternoon, (August 16) in New Delhi.

He was suffering from with a kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection, chest congestion and low urine output.

A press release issued by AIIMS had mentioned that his condition had worsened and he was put on life support system.

Vajapayee was a long-term diabetic and had only one functional kidney. He had suffered from a stroke in 2009, which had weakened his cognitive ability. He subsequently developed dementia.

Vajapayee had thrice served as the Prime Minister of India, with the first  term of 13 days in 1996, for a period of eleven months from 1998 to 1999, and then from 1998 to 2004. He was a member of the Indian Parliament for over four decades, being elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament, ten times, and twice to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament.
