Dr Praveer Rai who is Additional Professor Gastroenterology SGPGI Lucknow won silver medal in the Asian EUS Cup. The competition was held on the last day of 2nd Asian EUS 2017 Congress in Mumbai.
After the session Dr Praveer Rai spoke My Medical Mantra. He emphasised on the need of improvement in the quality of EUS training in India.
“EUS has a great potential. But there are very few experts who can perform EUS. I come from UP and in the state there are not more than 10 gastroenterologists who can perform EUS procedure.”
He added, “Now gradually the number in increasing. In our institute each year we train 5-6 fellows for EUS technique. We need to have more experts and also the quality of EUS training in India,” said Dr Rai.
The EUS technique is gradually finding its roots in India. For the deeper penetration of EUS, there is necessity of the trained experts who can perform the procedure accurately.
While explaining the challenges on learning the EUS procedure Dr Rai said, “It is a time taking process to learn the procedure and also requires a lot of patience. Once you learn it things become very simple. For a particular patient you can do the diagnostic procedure in short time.”
EUS has gained a lot of potential in interventional therapies as well. “Now, EUS has got therapeutic role as well. There are many upcoming interventional EUS techniques. They are still in pipeline. People are doing a lot of research on it,” said Dr Rai.
In the Asian EUS Congress 2017 a lot of interactive seasons were organised so that experts from various countries can share their experiences and learn from it.
Dr Rai said that such initiatives play an important role in the advancements of EUS technique. “Doctors can learn about various diseases in the crisp manner directly from the experts. In case of any doubt they can directly ask the experts,” said Dr Rai.
