Elphinstone stampede: Passengers suffer serious injuries

At least 22 passengers were killed and 36 are injured in a stampede at Mumbai’s Elphinstone railway station. The incident occurred during peak hours following rains


On Friday, at 10.30 am, when the incident took place the foot over-bridge was heavily crowded. People were standing on the stairs and on the foot over-bridge waiting for the rains to stop. But, in the meanwhile, more and more people kept coming, after which there was a chaos and stampede occurred.

22 people (18 male, 4 female) were killed and 39 ((30 male, 9 female) are injured in the unfortunate incident. Injured people are admitted to KEM Hospital.

Injuries suffered by the passengers:

  • Hand and leg fracture
  • Chest pain
  • Head
  • Nose
  • Neck

Speaking to My Medical Mantra , Dr Pravin Bangar Senior Administrative officer said, “The severe injuries are chest and head injuries. Minor injuries are leg fractures. Critical patients are being treated in the Intensive care unit (ICU).  While 22 people are dead.”

Dr Deepak Sawant, the state health minister said, “22 passengers have lost their lives while 39 passengers  have been injured. The post-mortem of the deceased passengers has been started. The injured are being treated at KEM Hospital.”
